what’s new in washington d.c.?
If you’d like to pay your respects to RBG in person, today is your last chance to do so in person. RBG is lying in repose in front of the Supreme Court from 9 AM to 10 PM today. Following that, she will be the first woman to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. Because of pandemic restrictions, the ceremony at the Capitol will only be for invited guests.
This weekend is your last chance to head to Sunset Cinema at The Wharf. Tonight and tomorrow, you can rent a cabana for $10/person and settle in to watch Jumanji: The Next Level.
let’s talk food
Eater DC highlighted nine of the most anticipated restaurant openings this fall - from a new food hall in Capitol Hill (The Roost) to Japanese hot pot in Adams Morgan (Shabu Plus).
what’s on our minds?
With most restaurants reliant on outdoor dining for a significant share of their business, the pending cold weather could spell doom for their revenues. The D.C. city government is hoping to help address this issue by granting businesses $6k to winterize their outdoor dining spaces with tents, propane tanks, additional furniture, and other winter necessities. Washingtonian highlighted some creative ways restaurants have already begun to prep: blankets, heated floors, and seasonal drinks.
So many inequalities are revealed by the pandemic, but one that may not be top of mind? A dedicated desk or work space for children, the majority of whom are now virtually learning. A family in Gaithersburg, MD stepped up to help, building and delivering desks to about 40 families in the past few weeks. Unfortunately, the demand far exceeds the supply - not only in desks, but also in so many other things required for virtual learning. In D.C., computer and internet access remain significant barriers with over half of families indicating that they lack the necessary technology to participate in virtual learning.
Quick links to other weekly #goodreads:
The Election That Could Break America - per The Atlantic, “If the vote is close, Donald Trump could easily throw the election into chaos and subvert the result. Who will stop him?”
The Cheating Scandal That Ripped the Poker World Apart - per Wired, “Mike Postle was on an epic winning streak at a California casino. Veronica Brill thought he had to be playing dirty. Let the chips fall where they may.”
‘I’m not supposed to be here’ per The Washington Post, “Stuck in limbo at home, two sisters fought loneliness, loss and each other. Then they had to say goodbye.”
what are we watching/reading?
The Guest List by Lucy Foley. Feeling bummed about not being able to travel? This thriller will make you perfectly happy to be right where you are - and not at an extravagant wedding on an isolated island off the coast of Ireland. A body is discovered early on before the book shifts to alternating points of view (all awful in their own ways), each with their own motives and, of course, dark secrets.
Schitt’s Creek on Netflix. La la la-la la la la… After an Emmy’s sweep last weekend, Schitt’s Creek is definitely the buzziest comedy on the block these days. And for such good reason - it’s sweet, compelling, ridiculously funny, and smart. The first season starts off a bit slow, but it really hits its stride in season 2 and only gets better from there. If you haven’t seen it (or want to rewatch), now’s the perfect time before season 6 (the final season) hits Netflix on October 7. If you’re familiar and pining for some Alexis clips, I could watch this montage all day.
