9.10- streatery fever
what’s new in washington d.c.?
Femme Fatale uses a space formerly occupied by a restaurant to highlight female and non-binary creators and artists. This Saturday, they’re hosting an open market at their 4th and Mass NW location to feature their collaborators.
let’s talk food
Everyone’s* favorite warehouse district, Union Market, is opening a brand new restaurant concept - Hi-Lawn - this weekend on the roof of the building. The restaurant/bar will feature rooftop views and seasonal themes. First up? picnic chic meets backyard barbecue.
In other new restaurant concepts, Downtown DC is hoping to add a “streatery” on 8th Street between H and I Streets NW. The plan is for a variety of restaurants to develop mobile kitchens that serve patrons sitting in the common area.

what’s on our minds?
I’m sure all of us have seen things on Instagram and other social media during COVID-19 that make us think - how could someone be doing this during a pandemic? For me, it’s been the large indoor weddings with no masked attendees in sight. In a story that affirmed my visceral reaction to these posts, it’s now widely reported that one wedding in Maine with 65 attendees ultimately caused three deaths and 147 COVID-19 cases. Most of the cases were secondary and spread quickly - guests infecting family members who then infected coworkers, etc.
By now, you’ve probably seen some of the extremely eerie photos of the orange sky in the San Francisco bay area. The deep orange skies and ensuing air pollution, caused by the multiple large fires along the West Coast, are presenting a significant health threat to the area - in Mendocino County, north of San Francisco, the air quality is likened to smoking 12 cigarettes a day.
D.C. kids are missing restaurant dining and Washington City Paper rounded up some of their best (and cutest) quotes about why - from missing dangling feet on high-top chairs to the show at a Hibachi restaurant.
Quick links to other weekly #goodreads:

You Don’t Know Her, per Vulture, “Thirty years into an epic career, Mariah Carey is still trying to explain herself.”
Targeted- per Tampa Bay Times, “Pasco’s sheriff created a futuristic program to stop crime before it happens. It monitors and harasses families across the county.”

what are we watching/reading?
Election on Amazon Prime. This is an oldie - premiered in 1999 - but just as relevant as ever. Reese Witherspoon stars as Tracy Flick, a ruthlessly overachieving candidate for high school student body president. In the process, her teacher (played by Matthew Broderick), charged with running the student election, reaches the edge of his sanity. p.s. this one is filmed in Nebraska!
U.S. Open. The tennis grand slam, played each year in New York City, reaches it conclusion this weekend. Semis are today and tomorrow, with the championship matches over the weekend. Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams have a path to face each other in the championship - giving the world a repeat of the controversial 2018 finals.
