10.15 - peanut butter jelly time
what’s going on in d.c.
There’s a lot (!) happening this weekend. Some highlights:
The National Symphony Orchestra is performing Marvel’s Black Panther at the Kennedy Center tonight and tomorrow.
The All Things Go music festival is at Merriweather Post tomorrow with Haim, St. Vincent, Charli XCX, and Lauv headlining the event. Tickets start at $89 for the two-stage festival. Tonight, there’s also a free creator summit at the Eaton with a panel headlined by author Jia Tolentino.
The flower shop She Loves Me, previously in Petworth, opens their Capitol Hill location tomorrow to celebrate Dahlia Day. Blooms are available in 3 or 6-stem bunches.
Catch Edward Scissorhands with a view of Dupont Circle on Saturday night as the Ven Hotel’s rooftop hosts Fright Fest. Tickets are $20.
The Bark Ball, the Humane Rescue Alliance’s annual fundraiser, returns on Saturday at the Washington Hilton. Dogs are, unsurprisingly, welcome at the gala.
If you’re ready to skip right into the holiday season, Lumino City - a massive light installation - is setting up at Roer’s Zoofari in Vienna from tonight through January. This is the first outpost of the festival outside of New York.
Capital Pride Alliance is hosting their first festival, Colorful Fest, at Union Market’s Dock 5 on Sunday. The event will feature entertainment, food, and exhibitors.
Hirshorn Museum is presenting The Weather, an immersive exhibit by renowned artist Laurie Anderson. The exhibit, which opened last month, runs through next summer. The centerpiece room, Four Talks, is particularly compelling. (h/t to Zan for rec)
let’s talk food and drinks
my weekly best bite: Veggie sandwich at Bread Furst (that bread….)
PB&J croissants? yes please. SakuSaku Flakerie is a pop-up in Cleveland Park offering Japanese-American treats.
Ilili, a Lebanese restaurant, opened in the glass cube at the Wharf (where Mike Isabella’s Requin once was) last week. Their design team went all out, developing a beautiful garden aesthetic.
Get in the Halloween spirit early with this list of local spots offering events and special menus. While some events are only the weekend of, others are celebrating throughout the month - including Western Market’s Hocus Pocus screening tonight.
what’s on our minds?
Mayor Bowser sailed to reelection in 2018, but popular D.C. Council member Robert White decision to run for mayor is shaping up to create a much more competitive mayoral race in 2022. White, a more left-leaning politician, has already picked up some big endorsements, including attorney general Karl Racine (who many expected to run himself). Bowser is yet to declare her plans.
Quick links to other weekly #goodreads:
Blood, Lies, and a Drug Trials Lab Gone Bad - per Wired, “The system for testing pharmaceuticals in the US relies on contractors adhering to strict guidelines. But one of them chose profits over protocols.”
Raya and the Promise of Private Social Media - per The New Yorker, “The app has created a space free of the problems that plague the rest of the Web, but only by leaving almost everybody out.”
McKinsey Never Told the FDA It Was Working for Opioid Makers While Also Working for the Agency - per ProPublica, “The consulting giant was helping Purdue Pharma and Johnson & Johnson fend off FDA regulations even as it helped shape FDA drug policy.”
what are we watching/reading?
You on Netflix. You is back for a third season, with serial killer Joe meeting his match with sweet and scary Love. There’s a baby, suburbs, and a new neighbor to obsess over.
Succession on HBO. The critically acclaimed show about a terrible wealthy family (I think?) returns for its third season on Sunday. My cousin said there’s two types of people - those who love Succession and those who haven’t seen it. I’m planning to switch camps soon.
