what’s new in washington d.c.?
Looking to get out of the city for a classic fall day? The weather looks great on Saturday, so it could be a perfect day to try one of the Washington Post’s highlighted pumpkin patches, farmers markets, or apple orchards.
let’s talk food
As the weather gets colder, cozy bars and restaurant patios are all the more appealing. Washingtonian rounded up 14 stand out locations - from Wunder Garden in NoMa with fire pits and cabanas to H St’s Little Stable with blanket and cheese fondue. If you don’t want to risk a wait, here’s a list of the beer gardens/patios that are taking reservations.
Sharbat, a new Azerbaijani bakery in Adams Morgan, is developing some of the most beautiful baked goods out there. From a multi-layered honey cake to a pakhlava (dessert pastry with hazelnuts and walnuts), each of their pastries look incredibly beautiful.
Eater DC compiled a list of the best biscuits in D.C. and my two favorites made the list - the perfectly flaky ones at Union Market’s St. Anslem and the always delicious ones baked with cheese and other fillings at a baked joint in Mt. Vernon.
There’s a new Detroit-style pizza (think a thick crust with tomato sauce layered on top) pop-up, Side Door Pizza, in Navy Yard.
what’s on our minds?
One positive of most people staying home this summer? D.C. recorded the cleanest air in decades. In addition to a reduction in traffic pollution, officials credit a combination of effective policies to reduce pollution (limits on power plants, stricter vehicle efficiency standards) and this summer’s cooler/wetter weather.
A fly on VP Mike Pence’s head during last night’s debate quickly became the star of Twitter. Joe Biden’s campaign jumped on the buzz, directing voters to flywillvote.com (check it out and make sure you’re registered and have a voting plan!)
Quick links to other weekly #goodreads:
Meet the Customer Service Reps for Disney and Airbnb Who Have to Pay to Talk to You - per ProPublica, “Arise Virtual Solutions, part of the secretive world of work-at-home customer service, helps large corporations shed costs at the expense of workers. Now the pandemic is creating a boom in the industry.”
Inside the airline industry's meltdown - per The Guardian, “Coronavirus has hit few sectors harder than air travel, wiping out tens of thousands of jobs and uncountable billions in revenue. While most fleets were grounded, the industry was forced to reimagine its future.”
A TikTok house divided - per Vox, “You’re 19 years old. You get famous overnight. You move to LA. Now what?”
what are we watching/reading?
Deaf U on Netflix. This documentary series premieres tomorrow and features a group of students at D.C.’s own Gallaudet University. The show follows their social lives and college drama, but all within the larger context of the deaf community.
The Institute by Stephen King. Stephen King’s latest novel is the most thought-provoking and creepy of his that I’ve read. Children with some levels of paranormal talents are kidnapped by “the institute” and forced to team up to attempt to defeat their captors. It’s a great mystery/thriller that will keep you up late reading.
