what’s going on in d.c.
Saturday marks the return of the always popular Adams Morgans Porchfest, with 20+ homes and businesses hosting musical performances from 2-6 PM. Takoma Park hosts their own street festival on Sunday, with performers and an outdoor market throughout the day.
Open Streets is also back on Saturday, with D.C. closing three miles of Georgia Ave NW for fitness classes, music, food, and more car-free activities.
Georgetown’s French Market sets up shop this weekend along Wisconsin Avenue. Expect sidewalk sales, French food, a caricature artist, music, stilt-walkers, and “a strolling mime”
Oktoberfest events are in full steam this weekend, including the very cute dash of the dachshunds at the Wharf on Saturday afternoon.
let’s talk food and drinks
my weekly best bite: Detroit-style pizza from 14th St’s Red Light
Ice Cream Jubilee is transitioning to their fall menu, with apple-butter/ oatmeal cookie, maple/rye/pecan, and pumpkin/honeycomb flavors making the cut this week.
It’s Georgian restaurant Tabla’s one-year anniversary and to celebrate, the restaurant is offering mini bites and Georgian wine on Saturday from 10-3.
Switch up your brunch selections with a new choice from this Eater list - strongly concur with the Crazy Aunt Helen’s and St. Vincent Wine recs.
what’s on our minds?
The Trump Hotel, nearly empty since the election, is reportedly about to be sold. The Trump Org leases the property for $250k a month from the federal government, once a mecca for the MAGA crowd, has struggled with occupancy and optics since Trump’s unsuccessful re-election.
Read about some of D.C.’s TikTok stars before switching platforms to watch their content. The White House has been jumping on the trend too, with Washingtonian noting that “The Biden White House Is Embracing Internet Oddballs” (and Olivia Rodrigo of course).
The Capitals added a very cute pup, Biscuit, to their hockey fam. Add dogs discovering ice to the (very) long list of pup-approved activities.
Quick links to other weekly #goodreads:
Simone Biles Chose Herself - per The Cut, “I should have quit way before Tokyo.”
When Dasani Left Home- per The New York Times, “What happens when trying to escape poverty means separating from your family at 13?”
On the Internet, We’re Always Famous - per The New Yorker, “What happens when the experience of celebrity becomes universal?”
what are we watching/reading?
Squid Game on Netflix. This dark Korean-language drama blew up on Netflix over the past week and is on its way to becoming Netflix’s most watched original series. If you’re unfamiliar, the Hunger Games-esque show takes a very dark twist on playground games - desperate players seek to win a giant cash prize by winning tug of war-esque games. If you’re considering, note it’s more psychologically brutal than jump scary.
Seinfeld on Netflix. Your dad’s favorite show, Seinfeld, is available on Netflix today, following the streaming company’s $500M+ deal to nab the popular 90s comedy.
