Giant, the only grocery store in Ward 8 east of the Anacostia, opened in 2007. Now, city council member Trayon White is concerned that the store’s future may be in question given an increase in shoplifting/crime and reports by White that the store is losing hundreds of thousands of dollars a month. Although Giant hasn’t confirmed any plans to close the store, should it close, Ward 8 would be left without any viable grocery options, forcing residents to travel far for sustenance.
