07.01 - red, white, and blue
what’s going on in d.c.
Friday: The Wharf hosts a free outdoor concert, headlined by Maggie Rose (6 pm) | Jazz in the Garden at the National Gallery of Art returns - free registration is required, beginning at 10 am (6 pm)
Saturday: Georgia Ave’s Hook Hall hosts Red, White, and Brew, featuring a hot dog eating championship featuring puppy participants (2 - 11 pm) | Gimme, Gimme Disco, an ABBA-inspired dance party, takes over the 9:30 Club (9 pm)
Sunday: It’s the 25th anniversary of FRESHFARM, the sponsor of most of D.C.’s farmers markets - to celebrate, the group is incorporating activities and demos to their Dupont Circle market (8:30 am - 1:30 pm)
Monday: Unsurprisingly, tons of events in the nation’s capital to celebrate the 4th. There are parades at the Mall, Capitol Hill, Palisades, and Takoma Park; a bunch of rooftop stops to watch the fireworks (more here or here); and the Capitol Fourth Concert on the West Lawn of the Capitol.
All weekend (and beyond): The Playhouse, the National Building Museum’s latest summer immersion, opens today. The Shakespearian attraction will host showings of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the evenings and offer behind-the-scenes activities during the day | The National Gallery of Art’s East Building (the one designed by I.M. Pei) reopened yesterday after a four-month refurbishment closure.
looking ahead: DC library card holders will have free access to three museums (The Spy Museum, Kreeger, and Phillips) on select days in July/August.
let’s talk food and drinks
my weekly best bite: Fettucine at CityCenter’s Centrolina
Try out an Eater-approved breakfast sandwich - including takeaway options from Pearl’s and Northside or sitdown spots such as Unconventional Diner.
Aslin, a beer garden and day-time coffee spot, opened on 14th St. yesterday after many years of back-and-forth on if the lot could be home to such a spot.
what’s on our minds?
180+ abortion rights protesters were arrested yesterday after sitting and blocking an intersection near the Supreme Court to protest the court’s decision to reverse Roe v. Wade. It follows another high-profile protest this week - one by Guido Reichstadter, an abortion rights supporter who climbed the Frederick Douglass Bridge and stayed for 28+ hours.
If you’re around and planning to Metro this weekend, bring your patience. Metro is warning the public that waits on the 4th may exceed an hour following the fireworks.
In case you’re lamenting not traveling this 4th - how about watching one of these Vulture-approve movies about “terrible vacations”
Quick links to other weekly #goodreads:
The nontoxic social media app that tells you your toxic traits - per Vox, “Personality tests are mostly bogus. Dimensional is fun anyway.”
The Other Cancel Culture: How a Public University Is Bowing to a Conservative Crusade - per ProPublica, “With a rising national profile and donor base and relatively little state funding, Boise State University should be able to resist pressure by the Idaho Legislature. Instead the university, led by a liberal transplant, has repeatedly capitulated.”
