let’s talk food and drinks
my weekly best bite: Basil Fried Rice at 14th St.’s Doi Moi
It’s shaping up to be a scorcher this weekend - what better way to cool off than with one of these soft serve ice cream cones or ice cream sandwiches. Or check out Brooklyn-based ice creamery Bad Habit pop-up at Georgetown’s Reverie on Saturday.
Capitol Hill has a new gin-focused cocktail bar - The Wells. Opening last night, the spot is only open on Thursday nights to start, but the sister Italian restaurant, La Collina, is open for the remainder of the weekend.
what’s on our minds?
On Wednesday, a pedestrian bridge collapsed over DC-295 in Northeast DC after a truck struck the bridge, causing it to collapse and injure five individuals. The bridge, which received a “poor” rating in its last inspection, is a critical pathway for Kenilworth and Eastland Gardens residents who need to cross the dangerous 295 to access the Deanwood metro station. It’s also, for many in the community, a reminder of the ways in which D.C. invests in infrastructure in wealthier wards at the expense of basic transportation needs in poorer areas.
Despite overall progress in D.C.’s vaccination rates, significant disparities remain across the city - now playing out with younger teens. While 67% of 12 to 15-year-olds in D.C.’s Northwest Ward 2 are vaccinated, only 5% of that age group in the Southeast Ward 8 are. Although some private schools are requiring vaccinations for the fall, D.C. Public Schools currently aren’t requiring eligible students to be vaccinated prior to returning in-person.
Quick links to other weekly #goodreads:
Meetings. Why? - per The New York Times, “Does this conversation need to be a meeting? Does anything? … The other thing humans love, besides their own birthdays: being acknowledged by other humans. Meetings provide opportunities for employees to be consulted in front of others, to have their presence expressly requested and to be invited to meetings.” (ed. note: The author Caity Weaver, has also authored gems documenting her 14-hour stay at TGI Friday’s, cruise with Paula Deen, and attendance at the most recent royal wedding).
The Anxiety of Influencers - per Harpers, “Educating the TikTok generation.”
‘The mansion on Emerson Street’ - per The Washington Post, “As homelessness continues to rise, an overwhelmed city issues an ultimatum: 48 hours to clear camp”
The Rise of the $10 Million Disc Golf Celebrity - per The Ringer, “How much can athletes really make in niche sports? A whole lot more than you might think. Disc golfer Paul McBeth set a new standard by signing an eight-figure endorsement contract—and his deal might only be the beginning.”
what are we watching/reading?
The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals on Netflix. Filmed prior to the pandemic, the travel series showcases three vacation rentals per episode, each themed around a common element, such as private islands or treehouses. While the cast can get a bit sappy in describing their awe and wonder at each location, this show is still worth the watch just to see some of the most unique vacation rentals around the world (and start planning your next trip).
The U.S. Olympics Gymnastics Trials are this weekend, with Simone Biles and the nation’s other top gymnasts taking the mat this weekend to determine who will represent the U.S. in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. The U.S. is allowed to bring four gymnasts to represent the country in team events, ensuring fierce competition for the remaining, non-Biles filled, spots.
