Celebrate Lunar New Year this weekend by booking a time to devour Ice Cream Jubilee’s tasting flights of six mini-scoops or grabbing celebratory take out from H St.’s Maketto.

let’s talk food and drinks
my weekly best bite: Sticky Rice’s Curry Fried Rice (they’re also offering at home sushi-making kits!)
Washingtonian pulled together a comprehensive list of neighborhood restaurants across the city - there’s a bunch of local gems among the 61 options here
I’m so gimmick susceptible, but Stellina Pizzeria’s pasta vending machine is screaming my name
what’s on our minds?
So why should D.C. be a state? Washington City Paper gathered 51 reasons (get it, get it??) to support statehood - which beyond the fact that we’re denied equal political rights, also has major economic (to start, D.C. was shorted about $750M in COVID relief funding and is unable to tax non-residents who work here) and other (no mayoral control over the D.C. National Guard) consequences.
Huffington Post has a gut-wrenching article about children trying to pull their parents back from the clutches of QAnon. Researchers believe baby boomers with limited tech literacy are most susceptible to the conspiracies, but . The nine adult children featured in the piece speak of their parents accumulating massive debt in search of “Q,” destroying their mental health, and severing of relationships. The issue is in no way limited to these families - there’s an active Reddit thread of QAnonCasualties and it’s likely about 10% of American adults believe some or all of these conspiracies.
Quick links to other weekly #goodreads:
Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird Are Goals - per GQ, “Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe both had Hall of Fame–worthy careers before they met. But to reach new, boundary-obliterating levels of achievement on and off the field, they needed each other. And, as they tell Emma Carmichael, their work is just getting started.” (ed. note: watch the 43 questions, it’s v cute)
Rhode Island Kept Its Schools Open. This Is What Happened.- per The New York Times, “Some teachers and students got sick. Principals had to improvise constantly. But it worked — mostly.”
Thread Man- per Columbia Journalism Review, “Seth Abramson’s viral meta-journalism unreality.” (ed. note: you’ll get the most bang for your buck with this story if you’re familiar with Seth’s Twitter account)
what are we watching/reading?
Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on Video on Demand, including Google Play. Haven’t watched this one yet, but I’ll try just about any comedy with Kristin Wiig. Add in that she and Annie Mumolo are playing caricatures of small town women from my home state of Nebraska going on a wacky vacation? Sold. NYT calls the flick a “kitsch fever dream,” which honestly sounds up my alley for this weekend.
